Bonnie-
I try that, too. Not only does it save water, but it extends the life of the clothes as well.

Another idea is to wear clothes more than once before washing. In many cultures, people wear an item several times before washing it, wearing an outfit a few days in a row. That's not really an American thing to do, but it sure cuts down on washing. (Of course, this is easier in cold weather than in hot humid weather!)

All of this reminds me of a chapter of Piper's "Let the nations be glad". Piper reminds us that we're in a awar and we need to live in such a way that reflects this. When we live economically and spend creatively so we can use more for His Kingdom....He'll do much with what we offer.

Marty-
You are right when talking about shopping the clearance racks. The other day I bought 2 Nike hooded, sweatshirts for $14 total. Not each but both of them! They are normally $50 each. Since, I currently work in a refrigerator, these have already been a great investment. Heather bought a lot of shirts and some other stuff for less than $50. Why pay full price when everything will eventually be on sale or on clearance.

Thanks for the other tips. I am curious, What cereal freezes well? Cereal has a shelf life of 100 years. :)

Steve-
I really had not thought about ordering jeans online, but I'll check it out. I have been skeptical because of sizing issues, but it that can be overcome I'd be very open to it. We have shopped online substantially the last two Christmas seasons.

Sonya-
Great idea!

Beth-
Smarty pants.

Art and Scott-
I'm not sure how to determine when gas savings overcomes having a payment. In Bob's example above, it would not take very long at all. Art, if you kept the truck for working around the house type stuff and bought a used hybrid for all your other driving around, it might not take but a couple of years to break even. Frugal Dad has an interesting look at the question. Driving well over 15k miles/year, as almost all pastors do, would bring a break even point even quicker.

Another thing that I am forced to factor in is time spent making repairs on older cars. When I am spending lots of time at various garages, or doing repair work myself (or ignoring work that should be done due to time constraints) it is time for me to consider something newer that costs me less time.

Scott-
Cereal also freezes well.

Excellent resource.

--My wife is an avid thrifter. She will find brand name clothes with tags still on them and pay $2-5 vs. the $30-60 for new-in-store.

--The heating and cooling tips are some I am already trying to implement so this gives validity to my arguments for my family when they start griping. I may have a found a "good reason" to finally get that grill. :)

--Got a chest freezer. Wouldn't know what to do without it to put in the extra food. FYI...loaves of bread freeze well.

--About gas hogs: I have a 12 year old Ranger that gets 15 mpg. But its paid for outright. I wonder if the gas savings is enough to warrant another car payment that we are not used to having.

And Sonya can decorate a house, too...

I am struggling with both of our monster vehicles: full size pick up for me and full size SUV for Bonnie. The problem for us is that they are paid off and we can still drive them for a loooong time. I can buy a lot of gas for a car payment, but I would much rather be driving something smaller and more economical. Not just for me, but I'd really like a hybrid. Some of the minor prophets record God's judgment on those who abuse the earth, and that is on my mind.

I'm not a catastrophist, either. I've read reports that the sun flares are really dormant and the last time they were this dormant, we had a mini ice age. I don't think that automobiles have had nearly the impact Al Gore says they have.

That still does not negate the fact that they do pollute and I do have a responsibility to be a steward of the Earth, as well as my pocketbook.

"Don’t buy faddish clothes on clearance-it’s too late by then."

Or be like dad and don't buy faddish clothes ever! Sorry, couldn't resist.

Garage sales and/or thrift stores. It's amazing what a can of spray paint can do to change the look of a pretty bland looking lamp or other home decor item.
